Template - not professional (legal/financial/medical) advice. This is a sample credit dispute letter template under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The FCRA imposes specific duties on consumer reporting agencies and furnishers. Consumers have rights to dispute inaccurate information, and agencies must investigate within statutory timeframes. This template must be customized with accurate facts and supporting evidence. Filing a dispute does not guarantee deletion; the agency and furnisher must investigate. Consult qualified counsel or a reputable consumer protection organization for assistance with complex disputes, identity theft, or if your rights are violated. As of 2026.

- State consumer credit reporting or identity theft protection laws (which may provide additional rights)

Tips for Effective Disputes
- Send by certified mail with return receipt or use the credit bureau's online dispute portal (if available) and keep confirmation.
- Be specific: identify the exact account, the exact inaccurate field (balance, date, status, ownership), and the specific reason it is wrong.
- Attach clear, legible copies (not originals) of evidence. Highlight or annotate key portions.
- Keep a log of dates, methods, and responses received.
- If the bureau fails to respond timely or the investigation is unreasonable, you may have a private right of action under the FCRA for actual damages, statutory damages (in some cases), and attorney fees.
- For identity theft, also file an identity theft report with the FTC (IdentityTheft.gov) and consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze.
Sample Follow-Up Language (If No Response or Unsatisfactory Response)
"By letter dated [[Date]], I disputed [[describe item]]. More than [[30/45]] days have passed and I have not received the required written results of the investigation. Please immediately delete the disputed information and confirm in writing within ten (10) days, or provide the specific verification documentation relied upon."

Common Reasons for Disputes (Reference List)
Use the most applicable reason(s) and customize with facts:
- Account does not belong to me (identity theft, mixed file, or unauthorized use).
- Balance is incorrect (I paid the account in full / balance is lower than reported).
- Payment history is inaccurate (I was never late; or the late payment date is wrong).
- Account is too old to be reported (exceeds 7-year limit under FCRA § 605, with limited exceptions for certain judgments and tax liens).
- Duplicate entry of the same debt.
- Account was included in bankruptcy and should show $0 or discharged status.
- Creditor agreed to delete or update the item (provide settlement letter).
Attach evidence supporting the specific reason(s) you select.
